It is easier to for me to wake up at sunrise from a tent than a comfortable bed. Easier still when the wake-up call comes from the policia wondering what i´m doing sleeping on the beach in the middle of winter. There are no automatic ID checks here, so unlike the u.s. where it´s guaranteed if you´re a stranger with certain length hair, skin color or lack of finances. The horror stories of the federales that i´ve recently heard usually involve some bad-luck driver getting his car stolen, or involved in a hideous accident and landing in a mexican hospital without enough friends or money.
Like drunk driving epics, i think the problem´s more with the nature of autos than anything else.
This is coming from a former used-car salesman, from detroit, whose greatest friends have often been car salesmen.
And none dare call it treason!
I am back on the toll road, labeled ¨ensenada scenic highway.¨ There is a much bigger shoulder than i read about, and the coast road changes from untrammeled development to wild past puerto nuevo.
There is a yucca tree here i´ve never seen in the u.s., lots of pedestrians walking the highway, louder and older cars without smog control, and the beautiful faces of those who chose love of the indians over war.

The ensenada carnaval is the biggest event of the year. I remember many years ago a hurried cruise that i took with a friend to this very spot. It was given as a reward to the booming dot company she worked for.. Three days to fly from denver to los angeles, get on a boat, float down to ensenada--where we were too frazzled to even go down the gangplank--motor back up the coast to l.a., and then fly home to denver.
     A bicycle' s a little slower.
