The monsoon is official. Rain follows all the way down the coast, violently purple skies crying out for me to stop. I leave the toll road and try calle libre for a change. The wd-40 used to keep the chain from rusting flavors my tacos pescado
Finally i just have to admit that i´m not sovereign in this strange country and hole up for the night on the beach, in a tent that seems suddenly too small. With the aid of a bit of mota given by a storekeeper, i am more than a little proud that enough of my boy scout training has survived to enable me to sleep comfortably in the cold and wet.

The Mexicans are born artists. It is not their hobby or vocation. It is their life. Some of them make pesos doing it. But that is not why they do it. A few sign names to their pieces. But that is not why they do it. There is something wonderul in the air here that has to do with the proximity of beauty and garbage, i think.

There are lots of gringos between tijuana and san quintin, and some even commute to work across the border in san diego. It is easy to see why. Land, buildings and food are cheaper by far here than in alta california. The manana attitude, the the mexican government´s rule that foreigners cannot own land but only keep it in trust, the hideous new war fever that is making it harder to cross the border back into the u.s. (but there is no checkpoint coming into mexico!), and the almost entirely irrational fear some norteamericanos have about the mexican policia are four reasons why all of los angeles has not arrived here. I hope and pray that the mexicans are able to ingest some of the good from the u.s without choking on our many sins.
